Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja after representing President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York and concluding strategic engagements in Germany. The week-long diplomatic mission focused on advancing Nigeria’s interests, promoting Africa’s development agenda, and strengthening international partnerships.
During the UNGA session, Shettima delivered Nigeria’s national statement, calling for comprehensive United Nations reforms to make the global body more representative, transparent, and responsive to contemporary challenges. He also championed Africa’s sovereignty over its $700 billion in mineral resources, urging global stakeholders to support policies that empower African nations to benefit from their natural wealth.
The delegation engaged in high-level discussions with global leaders, including representatives of the United Kingdom, the Gates Foundation, and other international organizations. These meetings focused on collaborative initiatives spanning health, education, technology, and investment opportunities aimed at boosting Nigeria’s socio-economic growth and Africa’s strategic position on the world stage.
A highlight of the mission was Shettima’s meeting with UN Secretary-General António Guterres, who commended Nigeria’s consistent advocacy for peace, security, and reform in multilateral institutions. During the interaction, Shettima secured support for Nigeria’s bid for a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, a milestone that underscores the country’s growing influence in global governance.
In Germany, Shettima engaged with international investors and policy experts to showcase Nigeria’s $200 billion energy transition opportunity, emphasizing the country’s potential in renewable energy, natural gas, and sustainable infrastructure projects. He highlighted how investment in Nigeria’s energy sector could create jobs, drive technological innovation, and position the nation as a regional energy hub.
Returning to Abuja, Vice President Shettima affirmed that the diplomatic tour had strengthened Nigeria’s global profile and opened new avenues for investment, development cooperation, and international collaboration. The mission is expected to catalyze opportunities in governance reform, energy, and socio-economic development while showcasing Nigeria’s leadership and strategic vision on the global stage.
