The Federal Government has activated the Steering Committee for the National Community Food Bank Programme, marking a significant step in the implementation of a nationwide social intervention aimed at strengthening food security, improving nutrition outcomes, and providing structured support for vulnerable populations across Nigeria.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting held in Abuja, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, urged members of the Committee to prioritise execution and measurable outcomes, stressing that the initiative must move beyond planning stages into effective delivery that reaches communities in need. He noted that the success of the programme would be judged not by administrative processes but by its real impact on households, particularly those facing acute food insecurity and malnutrition, adding that accountability and coordination among implementing agencies would be central to achieving the programme’s objectives.
The National Community Food Bank Programme, which is an initiative attributed to the First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, is designed to address malnutrition, enhance food distribution systems, and strengthen community-level nutrition support structures across all 774 local government areas in the country.
The Steering Committee is chaired by the Coordinating Minister and includes representatives from key federal ministries such as Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Agriculture and Food Security, Women Affairs, and Health, alongside agencies including the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, reflecting a multi-sectoral approach to addressing food insecurity.
