The Nigerian Army has announced that troops of Operation ENDURING PEACE successfully neutralized two armed gunmen in a coordinated ambush operation in the Marit general area of Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State. According to a statement released by Captain Chinonso Polycarp Oteh, Media Information Officer of the Joint Task Force, the operation took place at approximately 7:49 p.m. on Tuesday, April 21, 2026, near Doruwa Babuje. The army stated that the ambush was launched following the receipt of credible intelligence regarding the movement of armed gunmen known for terrorizing local communities through violent attacks, sexual assault, and armed robbery.

The Nigerian Army reported that upon sighting the criminals, troops sprang a successful ambush. In the ensuing firefight, two armed gunmen were neutralized, while several others fled into the surrounding bushes under the cover of darkness. The army added that during a search of the immediate area, troops recovered one locally fabricated rifle, five rounds of 7.62x39mm ammunition, a cutlass, a jackknife, and a mobile phone. The statement further noted that troops remain firmly positioned within the general areas of Marit and Lajam villages to ensure the continued safety of residents, and that deliberate efforts are currently ongoing to track and apprehend other fleeing criminal elements.

According to the military, the criminals had been responsible for a range of atrocities including violent attacks, sexual assault, and armed robbery against local communities in the Barkin Ladi area. The successful ambush is seen as a significant blow to the criminal network operating in the region. The army reaffirmed that Operation ENDURING PEACE remains committed to its mandate of protecting the lives and property of all law-abiding citizens. The military also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious movements to the nearest security formation.

The Nigerian Army has called on residents of Plateau State to cooperate with security agencies by providing timely information that could assist in tracking the fleeing suspects. The army assured the public that troops will maintain their presence in the area to prevent any reprisal attacks or further criminal activities. The recovered items have been taken into military custody for further investigation, and the mobile phone is being analyzed for intelligence that could lead to the arrest of the remaining gang members. As of the time of this report, no official statement has been issued by the Plateau State Police Command regarding the operation.
