A night of terror descended on Tsafe Local Government Area of Zamfara State on Monday, 1 June 2026, when a gang of armed bandits stormed a private residence, killing a man identified as Sagir Umar and abducting members of his family before escaping into the surrounding bush. The attack, which occurred late in the evening, sent shockwaves through the community, which has endured repeated raids by criminal groups operating from forest enclaves in the North‑West.

According to initial accounts from local residents, the assailants arrived on motorcycles, brandishing AK‑47 rifles and other sophisticated weapons. They fired sporadically to create panic before forcing their way into the targeted home, where they shot Sagir Umar at close range. The gunmen then seized an unspecified number of his relatives and fled along a bush path that leads to known bandit hideouts in the Rugu Forest complex, a vast stretch of woodland that straddles the borders of Zamfara, Katsina, Kaduna and Niger states. The exact number of persons abducted remains unclear as of Tuesday, 2 June, as security operatives and local vigilantes are still working to assess the full extent of the incident. The Zamfara State Police Command has not issued an official statement on the attack, and no arrests have been reported. The injured are believed to be receiving treatment at an undisclosed medical facility.

The attack is the latest in a long series of violent incidents that have turned Tsafe LGA into one of the most volatile areas in Zamfara State. The local government area, which borders the Rugu Forest, has been a frequent target of armed gangs who launch night raids on farming communities, rustle cattle, abduct residents for ransom and burn homes. In May 2026 alone, suspected bandits killed 11 residents in the Ware community of Tsafe LGA in a brutal afternoon assault. On 22 May 2026, police operatives foiled an attempted attack on Gidan Fulani Village in the Yandoto District of Tsafe LGA, neutralising one suspected attacker. Earlier in April, more than 2,000 villagers fled their homes over fears of reprisal attacks by bandits following military operations that targeted their enclaves. The palace of the district head in Yankuzo community was also set ablaze in a reprisal attack.

The raid on Sagir Umar’s residence came just a day after armed bandits killed 17 people, including seven Sallah visitors, in Dangulbi community in Tureta LGA of Sokoto State – an attack that saw hundreds of gunmen on about 150 motorcycles loot shops and hold a village hostage for nearly nine hours. The two incidents have deepened public anxiety over the persistent inability of security forces to protect rural communities. Residents of Tsafe have repeatedly appealed to both the state and federal governments to deploy more security personnel, create a permanent military presence in the area, and improve early‑warning systems. Poor road infrastructure, they argue, often delays security responses, leaving vulnerable villages exposed to hit‑and‑run attacks.

As of Tuesday evening, no group had claimed responsibility for the Tsafe attack, and the Zamfara State Police Command had yet to provide details on any rescue operation. The families of the abducted victims now face an agonising wait, not knowing whether the kidnappers will demand a ransom or whether security forces will be able to locate them before they are moved deeper into the forest. The attack on Sagir Umar’s home is a grim reminder that in Zamfara State, where bandits have operated with impunity for years, no home – no matter how modest – is safe, and the night offers no guarantee of morning.
