In a strong condemnation of the Osun State APC leadership’s recent actions, Adekunle Babatunde Olayiwola has accused the party of arrogance and disrespect for the state's traditional institutions. His remarks come in the wake of an attack by APC's media allies on the Ataoja of Osogbo, following the royal’s appeal for the release of Osun's local government allocations during the Osun-Osogbo festival.
Olayiwola expressed his dismay that, instead of respecting the Ataoja's fatherly appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to release constitutionally due funds to Osun, the APC leadership chose to launch a vitriolic, gutter-level smear campaign against the revered traditional ruler.
A Royal Plea for the People
The Ataoja's appeal, which was made not for personal gain but on behalf of the people of Osun, particularly the farmers in Iwo, artisans in Ilesa, market women in Ede, civil servants in Osogbo, and students in Ife, sought to address the severe financial strain the grassroots have faced due to the state’s lack of local government funds. Olayiwola argues that rather than heed the call for equitable allocation of resources, the APC resorted to insults, undermining the very foundation of the state's traditions.
Political Arrogance and Sacrilege
Olayiwola characterized the APC's reaction as both reckless and sacrilegious, warning that insulting the Ataoja is an affront to the Yoruba cultural ethos. He further reminded the APC leadership that in Yoruba land, disrespecting the crown invites the wrath of the ancestors, a powerful force in the Yoruba spiritual tradition.
“The actions of the APC are not just a political misstep; they are an insult to the gods of our land,” he stated, emphasizing the deep-rooted cultural implications of such behavior. He noted that by blocking local government funds, the APC has systematically oppressed the people of Osun, leaving them vulnerable to political manipulation.
Wounds of the Past and the Future of Osun
Olayiwola also pointed out that the APC’s attempt to sabotage the grassroots for political control and their desire to repeat the failures of the Oyetola administration in 2026 would only result in further suffering for the people. He warned that despite any political backing from Abuja, the power to shape Osun’s future rests with the people—the artisans, farmers, traders, teachers, and market women who have benefited from the positive leadership of Governor Ademola Adeleke.
“The power that installs a governor in Osun is not in Abuja, it is in the hands of the people whose lives have been touched by the positive governance of Governor Adeleke,” Olayiwola said.
The Wrath of the Gods and the Power of the People
In a final admonition, Olayiwola warned those who insult the crown that the consequences would be dire. “The same traditional institution you trample on today will, in due time, raise the gods of the land against you,” he said. “You will learn that the curse of a land whose king you dishonour is heavier than any political burden you can carry.”
He concluded with a stern reminder: “Osun APC, continue in your arrogance. Keep spitting in the face of our tradition. The people are watching. The gods are watching. And come 2026, the ballot will humble you beyond recognition.”
