In the wake of recent violent incidents targeting officials of the Lagos State Parking Authority (LASPA), the Lagos State Police Command has apprehended seven individuals connected to the assault. The attack, which occurred at Better Mart, Badore Road, off Addo Road, Ajah, and at Ashley Mall in Epe, involved several LASPA staff and security personnel on official duty. The suspects are currently being held at the Badore Police Station in Lekki for further questioning, with the police preparing to proceed with the prosecution in a court of law.
The Lagos State Government has unequivocally condemned the attack on its personnel and reiterated its commitment to ensuring that those responsible face the full consequences of their actions. Mrs. Adebisi Adelabu, the General Manager of LASPA, emphasized that the agency would not tolerate such violent disruptions of public officials performing their lawful duties.
Incident Overview and Police Action
The altercation took place during a routine enforcement exercise conducted by LASPA officials as part of their mandate to ensure compliance with the state's parking regulations. LASPA's team was verifying the validity of parking permits at commercial establishments when they were confronted and physically assaulted by individuals linked to the two locations. The confrontation resulted in injuries to several LASPA personnel.
Following the incident, LASPA immediately alerted law enforcement, leading to the arrest of the suspects during a raid. Preliminary investigations are underway, and the suspects are expected to face formal charges under the relevant sections of Nigerian law.
Government's Firm Response and Legal Framework
Mrs. Adelabu condemned the assault and stressed that the state government would not allow such acts of aggression against its officials. She emphasized that all perpetrators would face legal action. The General Manager referenced Section 117 of the Criminal Code of Nigeria, which makes it a felony to obstruct or resist public officers in the discharge of their duties. The section prescribes a penalty of up to three years in prison or a fine of ₦200,000 for such offenses.
“Attacks on government officials carrying out their legitimate duties will not be tolerated. The rule of law must prevail in Lagos State, and we will ensure that those responsible are prosecuted accordingly,” Adelabu stated.
Legal Consequences and Enforcement of Parking Regulations
The LASPA General Manager also took the opportunity to reiterate the agency’s commitment to enforcing the Lagos State Parking Regulations. She clarified that all organizations and commercial centers in Lagos are required to obtain parking permits from LASPA for proper management and regulation of parking spaces. The attack occurred while the LASPA team was conducting a routine compliance check to ensure that businesses adhered to these regulations.
Adelabu further emphasized that any attack on LASPA officials or government personnel would not only result in prosecution of the assailants but could also lead to penalties for property owners where such incidents occur.
“Landlords and tenants in whose premises these attacks take place will also be held accountable. We will not allow any act of violence or obstruction of lawful duties to go unpunished,” she added.
A Clear Message to All Stakeholders
The Lagos State Government has sent a clear message that any form of resistance or violence against government personnel will face strict legal action. The authorities have vowed to ensure that the actions of a few individuals do not undermine the safety and functionality of Lagos as a well-managed and law-abiding state.
