Former SGF Babachir Lawal Alleges President Tinubu Did Not Win 2023 Election

Former Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Babachir David Lawal, has expressed strong reservations about the legitimacy of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s election victory in 2023, stating that, in his view, Tinubu did not win the election.

Mr. Lawal made the remarks during a televised interview on Channels Television on Monday, August 11, 2025. The former SGF claimed that the results which declared Tinubu Nigeria’s 16th president were not, in his opinion, reflective of the actual voting outcome.

“I believe he didn’t win the election,” Lawal said during the interview, citing “facts available to him” as the basis for his assertion.

A longtime political associate of President Tinubu, Babachir Lawal revealed that their personal and political relationship has since deteriorated.

“The problem with Bola Tinubu is that he thinks I’m the one that offended him. I didn’t offend him—he offended me. He is full of himself and thinks that now, as so-called president, he’s above everyone,” Lawal stated.

The former SGF’s comments have since stirred political reactions across the country, especially within the All Progressives Congress (APC), where Lawal was once a key figure.

While Lawal did not provide detailed evidence to support his claim during the interview, his statements add to the ongoing discourse surrounding the credibility of the 2023 general elections, which were hotly contested and legally challenged by opposition candidates.

The Presidency has not officially responded to the remarks as of the time of this report.
