Uphold Integrity, Truth, and Consistency — ICPC Chairman Urges Lawyers

The Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, has called on members of the legal profession to uphold integrity, truth, and consistency, describing them as foundational pillars for restoring public confidence in the Nigerian justice system.

Speaking during a meeting with members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Gwagwalada Branch, Dr. Aliyu emphasized the need for senior lawyers to lead by example and mentor the next generation of legal practitioners with values that will stand the test of time.

“Mentorship is key to shaping principled future lawyers. Our seniors at the Bar must take the responsibility to instill character and discipline into young practitioners,” he stated.

The ICPC Chairman further warned that inconsistency in legal reasoning and judicial conduct contributes to growing public distrust in the legal system.

“When the legal community sends mixed signals, we risk eroding the very foundation of justice. Inconsistency in judicial positions undermines the public’s faith in the rule of law,” he added.

As part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the profession, Dr. Aliyu revealed that the ICPC is prepared to collaborate with the NBA on anti-corruption and integrity training for lawyers, with a focus on ethics and institutional accountability.

Key Highlights from Dr. Aliyu’s Remarks:

  • Senior lawyers must mentor junior colleagues with timeless values.

  • Inconsistency in judicial decisions weakens public trust in the legal system.

  • ICPC is open to partnerships with the NBA for integrity-focused legal training.

  • Lawyers must let integrity lead the Bar and ensure the law remains a beacon of trust.

The meeting aligns with ICPC’s broader mandate to promote ethical governance and institutional integrity across public and private sectors.
