Lagos Wastewater Agency Shuts Down Lekki Estate for Illegal Sewage Discharge

Published on 13 August 2025 at 09:31

The Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has taken decisive action against MYCA7 Court, Van Daniel Estate, off Orchid Road, Lekki, for allegedly pumping untreated sewage into public drains, causing environmental pollution and endangering residents’ health.

According to the LSWMO, the violation came to light after multiple complaints from concerned residents over a recurring offensive odour in the area. Upon investigation, officials discovered that sewage was being discharged directly into public drains through a pumping machine, releasing untreated wastewater onto roads, drains, and lagoons.

General Manager of LSWMO, Engr. Adefemi Afolabi, described the practice as a grave public health risk capable of spreading communicable diseases. He stressed that Lagos State maintains zero tolerance for environmental degradation and will continue to sanction violators.

“Every act of environmental nuisance will be met with appropriate sanctions and prosecution. We urge residents to embrace proper wastewater management for the sake of public health and environmental sustainability,” Afolabi said.

The agency encouraged Lagosians to report any case of environmental pollution via its official hotlines 08022022397 or 07025332163, or through social media @lswmomedia on Instagram, X (formerly Twitter), and Facebook.
