FG Presents Foreign Carrier Operation Permit to Air Tanzania, Strengthens Bilateral Aviation Ties

The Federal Government of Nigeria has officially presented the Foreign Carrier Operation Permit (FCOP) to Air Tanzania Company Limited (ATCL) in a move aimed at enhancing aviation cooperation and strengthening bilateral relations between Nigeria and Tanzania.

The presentation ceremony, held at the Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development headquarters in Abuja, saw the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, mni, represented by Mr. Ahmed Tijani Mohammed, highlight the importance of the FCOP in improving operational efficiency, safety, and collaboration between the two nations.

“The presentation of FCOP to Air Tanzania Company Limited is a significant step in our efforts to promote aviation cooperation and excellence. We are confident this initiative will yield positive outcomes for both nations,” Dr. Kana stated.

The FCOP will standardize procedures and ensure seamless operations between aviation stakeholders in both countries, aligning with international best practices. Dr. Kana also reaffirmed the Nigerian government’s readiness to provide all necessary support for ATCL’s operations.

Speaking at the event, Mrs. Yinka Babaoye Iriobe, Director of Air Traffic Regulation at the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), expressed optimism about Air Tanzania’s entry into the Nigerian market, noting the nation’s strong aviation potential. She confirmed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between both countries will soon be signed at NCAA headquarters in Abuja, mandating ATCL to upload passenger data into the NCAA’s AVITECH portal.

In his remarks, the Tanzanian High Commissioner to Nigeria, H.E. Selestine Gervas Kakele, thanked the Nigerian government for its cooperation, calling Nigeria “the gateway to prosperity for all African nations.” He emphasized that ATCL is ready to launch direct scheduled flights between Dar es Salaam and Lagos, following the successful completion of regulatory requirements and base inspections by the NCAA.

The airline has also secured approval for its Local Security Operation Procedures (LSOP) and is seeking office space at Murtala Mohammed International Airport as well as residence permits for its staff.

The event was attended by top officials from the Ministry of Aviation, representatives of aviation agencies, and executives from Air Tanzania, including Edward Nkwabi, Grand Handling Manager, and Modester Mwanjala, Project Coordinator.
