FG Intervenes in Aviation Disputes, Orders Withdrawal of Ibom Air Complaint, Reduces KWAM 1 Ban

The Federal Government has resolved two recent controversies in Nigeria’s aviation sector, ordering the withdrawal of criminal charges against an Ibom Air passenger and reducing the flight ban imposed on Fuji music icon, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (KWAM 1).

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, announced the decisions in Abuja on Wednesday after high-level consultations with industry stakeholders.

In the first case, Ibom Air agreed to drop its complaint against Ms Comfort Emmanson, who had been accused of disruptive behaviour aboard a Lagos-bound flight on August 10. The move paves the way for her release from the Kirikiri Correctional Centre later this week.

Regarding the ValueJet incident involving KWAM 1, the Minister disclosed that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) will reduce the singer’s travel ban to one month. In addition, the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) plans to appoint him as an airport security protocol ambassador to promote awareness and compliance among travellers.

Mr Keyamo said the government’s actions were guided by the remorse expressed by both parties and a desire to maintain order while fostering goodwill in the aviation sector.

“We believe in enforcing rules with fairness and also in giving room for reconciliation when genuine contrition is shown,” he said.

Both cases had sparked public debate on the balance between passenger rights, airline authority, and regulatory enforcement in Nigeria’s aviation space.
