Bayelsa State’s own Prof. Dimie Ogoina, a Professor of Medicine and Infectious Diseases, has brought international recognition to Bayelsa Medical University (BMU) after delivering a high-profile presentation at the HIV/STI 2025 World Congress in Montreal, Quebec, Canada.
The congress, held from July 26–30, 2025 and organised by the International Union Against Sexually Transmitted Infections (IUSTI), convened top experts, researchers, and policymakers to address urgent issues in sexual health.
Prof. Ogoina was a featured speaker at a high-level symposium on “Mpox and Other Emerging STIs”, where he delivered a research-rich presentation titled “Mpox in Africa”. Drawing from groundbreaking studies, he outlined Africa’s central role in tracking and combating the Mpox outbreak, sparking an interactive Q&A that emphasized the need for African-led data and solutions in global health.
In addition to sharing scientific insights, Prof. Ogoina showcased BMU’s ASPIRE Agenda — a vision rooted in research excellence, digital innovation, and robust global partnerships. His presence underscored BMU’s growing stature in the world health community and reinforced the continent’s critical role in shaping international policy.
“This experience reaffirms my belief that Africa must remain central in global health conversations,” Prof. Ogoina told delegates. “Together, we can drive solutions that truly transcend borders.”
His participation marks yet another milestone for BMU in advancing African contributions to global medical science.
