In a bold step to bridge the communication gap between government and citizens, the Lagos State Government, through the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, has organised a one-day sensitisation forum designed to strengthen citizen participation in governance at all levels.
The event, tagged: “Sensitisation on Volunteerism: The Power of Community in Action. Say what you need, Say what you want, Lagos State is Listening”, was held at the STO Resource Centre, Assbifi Road, Alausa-Ikeja.
Delivering the keynote address, the Lagos State Deputy Governor, Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, emphasised the urgent need for better communication between government and the people, stressing that many residents are unaware of the numerous programmes and policies that directly benefit them.
“We have realised that a lot of what we do is not known by the people, and this is a serious communication challenge. Everyone here today is critical in giving us honest feedback. We want to know what we are doing well and where we are falling short,” Dr. Hamzat said.
He highlighted government investments in healthcare, including 26 General Hospitals, 376 Primary Health Care Centres, and ongoing projects such as the new Iba-Ojo General Hospital and expansions at Massey Hospital. He added that over 7.8 million Lagosians accessed healthcare through state hospitals in the past year, while new infrastructure projects include 184 ongoing road constructions across the state.
The Deputy Governor also pointed to efforts in youth empowerment, human capital development, environmental sustainability, and doctors’ quarters for underserved communities.
Speaking at the event, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement, Dr. Afolabi Abiodun Tajudeen, reiterated the importance of citizen engagement as a democratic pillar.
“We are here today to have a discussion. We see a lot of criticism on social media, but we want people to know that we are running a responsive government and your voice counts. Come and criticise us here, ask questions, and give your contribution, because the government cannot do it alone,” he said.
Dr. Tajudeen also encouraged citizens to embrace the CitizensGate Platform, an online channel for lodging complaints, making suggestions, and tracking government responses.
The Permanent Secretary of the Office, Engr. Sholabomi Shasore, described the forum as “a new beginning”, stressing the need to build a Lagos where citizens are informed, engaged, and empowered to contribute meaningfully to governance.
Civil society groups also lauded the government’s openness. The Country Director of BudgIT, Mr. Gabriel Okeowo, said participatory democracy thrives when all stakeholders are actively involved, praising Lagos State’s effort to embrace inclusive governance.
The event concluded with an interactive session where participants engaged directly with the Deputy Governor, asking hard-hitting questions on governance. Attendees reportedly expressed satisfaction with Dr. Hamzat’s detailed and candid responses.
