The Katsina State Government has confirmed the dramatic escape of 62 kidnapped victims following an airstrike by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) on the camp of a notorious bandit, Muhammadu Fulani, in Jigawa Sawai, Danmusa Local Government Area, a community bordering Zamfara State.
According to officials, the airstrike was carried out on Saturday at 5:10 PM, forcing the bandits to flee their stronghold and giving the captives an opportunity to escape.
During interviews, the freed victims said they took advantage of the confusion to run in different directions after the camp was bombed.
“The bandits fled because of the airstrike, and that gave us a chance to escape,” one victim recounted.
The government disclosed that 12 of the escapees are currently receiving medical treatment at Matazu General Hospital, while 16 others are being sheltered at the Army Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Kaiga Malamai.
Authorities have assured that all victims will undergo medical checks before being reunited with their families.
Most of the victims were abducted on Monday, August 11, 2025, during a night raid on Sayaya village by Fulani’s gang.
The group has been terrorising communities in Matazu, Kankia, Dutsinma, and even parts of Kano State, carrying out kidnappings and violent attacks.
In response to the persistent insecurity in Matazu and Bakori LGAs, the Katsina State Government has deployed the Quick Response Wing of the Nigerian Air Force to reinforce security and restore peace in the affected areas.
“Our troops are closely monitoring the situation for further rescue operations. The security situation in the area remains calm,” the government assured.
The State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Dr. Nasir Mu’azu, speaking on behalf of Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, praised the gallantry of the Nigerian Air Force and other security agencies involved in the operation.
“The government remains fully committed to ending banditry in Katsina. We commend our security forces for their bravery and assure families that the rescued victims will be reunited with their loved ones soon,” Mu’azu said.
