The Akwa Ibom State Government has revoked all land allocations made between May 29, 2023, and August 25, 2025, including government-acquired lands. The decision, according to the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Uko Essien Udom, SAN, is aimed at paving the way for the revalidation of all land allocations and the migration of land records to the new Akwa-GIS digital platform.
As part of this transition, the government announced that all fresh allocations and land transactions are suspended for one month, during which the Directorate of Land will be shut. The revalidation exercise itself is expected to last two months and will be conducted by the GIS office in the Ministry of Lands and Town Planning. The government further warned that any allocation or interest not revalidated within the stipulated period would automatically become invalid, urging all concerned to comply without delay.
This sweeping action is seen as a bold step toward improving transparency, curbing multiple allocations, and restoring confidence in the state’s land administration system. However, the sudden revocation has raised concerns among property holders and investors who fear possible disruption, delays, and legal tussles in the process of reclaiming their rights. Observers believe the suspension of land transactions may temporarily slow real estate activities across the state, even as the government insists the long-term benefits will include better accountability, efficiency, and improved revenue collection from land use charges.
While some analysts say the policy could attract future investors by sanitizing the system, others warn that litigation from aggrieved landowners could follow. For now, the move signals one of the most sweeping reforms in land management in Akwa Ibom’s recent history, with its ultimate impact hinging on how efficiently and fairly the revalidation process is carried out.
