A soldier of the Nigerian Army was fatally shot by a mobile police inspector while attempting to intercept a truck suspected of transporting solid minerals illegally from a mining site in Futuk, Alkaleri Local Government Area, Bauchi State.

The tragic incident occurred on August 25, 2025, around 7:50 p.m., when troops from the 33 Artillery Brigade, Bauchi, stopped a truck bearing registration number Gombe 676 BLG at a checkpoint in Futuk village. The driver reportedly refused to stop, prompting the Guard Commander, Master Warrant Officer Ali Haruna, to pursue the vehicle with his team on motorbikes until the truck was intercepted.

Upon halting the truck, a mobile police officer, identified as Inspector Yusuf Ibrahim, allegedly disembarked and opened fire on the Guard Commander, striking him in the stomach. Fellow soldiers quickly overpowered and disarmed the police officer, while the injured commander was rushed to Gombe Specialist Hospital. Sadly, he later succumbed to his injuries.

Sources revealed that the truck driver fled the scene amid the chaos. Preliminary findings indicate the vehicle was transporting solid minerals suspected to have been illegally mined from Yalo community, also in Alkaleri LGA. The police inspector is believed to have been on unauthorized escort duty for the truck.

“The reasons behind the truck’s refusal to stop, the decision of a trained police officer to open fire on soldiers, and the escape of the driver remain highly suspicious,” sources said, noting that investigations are ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Security analysts have raised concerns over the involvement of security personnel in illegal mining operations, describing it as a troubling trend that underscores the urgent need for independent oversight and accountability.
