The Anambra State Police Command on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, apprehended five suspected members of a notorious armed robbery and kidnapping syndicate following a report of a recent abduction on farmland at Isiagu, Awka, where the victim was released after ransom payment.

Acting on credible intelligence, operatives of the Rapid Response Squad Awkuzu raided the suspects’ hideout at Notoko, Awka, arresting Michael Nwobodo (30), Eze Friday (29), Uche Okolo (23), Chinedu Gilbert (29), and Dominic Oraz (38), the latter a confessed deserter of the Nigerian Army.

Recovered from the suspects were six automatic pump-action guns, 63 live cartridges, five machetes, police teargas canisters, a robber’s rocket launcher, handcuffs, criminal charms, communication devices, and a cash sum of ₦26,000. During interrogation, Dominic Oraz admitted deserting the Army in November 2024, and investigations are ongoing to identify and prosecute additional suspects.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, commended the operatives for their courage and urged residents to remain vigilant, law-abiding, and proactive in reporting suspicious activities. He reaffirmed the Anambra Police Command’s commitment to curbing violent crimes across the state.

This operation underscores the effectiveness of intelligence-led policing in combating organized crime. The swift action prevented potential harm to residents and disrupted a network capable of significant violence and ransom-related activity. By recovering both arms and critical criminal implements, the Police have not only mitigated an immediate threat but also sent a strong deterrent message to criminal elements operating in the region.
