As Taraba State marks its 34th anniversary, Governor Agbu Kefas has issued a stern warning to traditional rulers over actions he described as threats to peace, security, and development in the state.
During an engagement with royal fathers in Jalingo, Governor Kefas condemned the indiscriminate sale of land, issuance of illegal mining consent letters, participation in illegal mining, uncontrolled conferment of chieftaincy titles, and unauthorized appointment of Ardos. He noted that such practices have fueled farmer–herder conflicts and, in some instances, facilitated criminal activities.
“No person, no matter how highly placed, is above the law of Taraba State. Where the law is silent, I will invoke the doctrine of necessity to protect the people,” the Governor declared, warning that any traditional ruler found culpable would face sanctions ranging from suspension and deposition to prosecution.
While emphasizing the need for discipline, Governor Kefas clarified that the government seeks partnership, not rivalry, with traditional leaders. He urged them to consult authorities before conferring titles or appointing Ardos and to work alongside the government to promote peace and progress across the state.
Governor Kefas also assured citizens that his administration remains committed to addressing critical areas such as security, education, healthcare, infrastructure, and job creation, in line with available resources.
Highlighting the significance of the state’s 34th anniversary, he called on all stakeholders to make it a turning point for accountability and unity. “Leadership is a sacred trust from God and the people. Abuse of that trust will no longer be tolerated. Let us secure Taraba, let us unite Taraba, and let us move Taraba forward,” he said.
