The Itsekiri ethnic nationality has called on the Federal Government to initiate an independent judicial inquiry into the controversial outcome of the ward delineation exercise conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the Warri Federal Constituency of Delta State. The group claims that a careful review of INEC’s fieldwork report revealed “fraud and bias” in the delineation process, urging the prosecution of any officials found culpable.
The call was made during a press conference on Monday in Ugbuwangue, Warri South Local Government Area, led by the Chairman of the Warri Traditional Council of Chiefs and Ologbotsere of Warri, Chief Oma Eyewuoma. The gathering included several prominent Itsekiri figures, including former Delta State Commissioner for Transport, Hon. Vincent Uduaghan.
Speaking to journalists, Chief Eyewuoma described the INEC-led re-delineation of wards and units in the constituency as “fraudulent, unconstitutional, and ethnically biased,” stressing that the group is not seeking anything beyond legal compliance and fairness. “We are asking for the right thing to be done. Let INEC obey the law and stop being a tool for ethnic bias and electoral manipulation,” he said.
A communiqué issued by the Itsekiri Leaders of Thought and read by Secretary Chief Brown Mene highlighted that, while the group does not oppose the Supreme Court-mandated re-delineation exercise, they were concerned about noticeable irregularities. The communiqué noted discrepancies between INEC’s technical coordinates and actual locations on the ground, claiming the creation of “phantom polling units and wards.”
The Itsekiri community called on the Federal Government to establish an independent Commission of Inquiry to investigate INEC’s actions in Warri Federal Constituency. They insisted that any INEC officials or public office holders found responsible should face appropriate sanctions, serving as a deterrent against similar future conduct.
Additionally, the group demanded immediate implementation of all judicial decisions affecting the constituency, including the Court of Appeal ruling on the ten-ward structure in Warri South LGA, emphasizing that the judgment is final and not subject to appeal.
