Anambra Government Demolishes Illegal Structures at Oba International Drug Market Amid Concerns Over Lack of Alternative Housing

The Anambra State Joint Task Force, under the leadership of the Anambra State Physical Planning Board, recently demolished illegal structures at the Oba International Drug Market in Idemili South Local Government Area.

During the exercise, TPL Chika Nwankwo, Executive Secretary of the Local Planning Authority, criticized individuals who parcelled and sold land to unsuspecting buyers without state approval. She emphasized that no plot or buyer in the area possessed a government-sanctioned survey plan or development approval from the Anambra State Physical Planning Board.

“The structures marked for demolition were previously served notices on August 13, 2025. It is essential for the public to verify land ownership and approvals to avoid financial losses,” TPL Nwankwo stated.

While residents like Mrs. Chiamaka Enyesiobi thanked the government for taking swift action to reclaim the land, questions are emerging over the broader impact of such demolitions. Critics highlight that the state has historically not provided alternative housing or development plans for affected residents, raising concerns about displacement and economic disruption. Many wonder how businesses and traders who have invested in the market can recover, particularly as the government has yet to outline a plan for redevelopment or resettlement.

The incident underscores a tension between urban planning enforcement and the government’s responsibility to provide structured alternatives for displaced citizens, especially in commercial hubs.
