A coordinated early-morning operation on 2nd September 2025 by a joint security force comprising the Anambra Police, 302 Artillery Regiment (GS), 14 Field Engineer Regiment, Department of State Services (DSS), and the Anambra State Vigilante (Agunechemba) successfully targeted an ESN/IPOB militia camp in Aguluezechukwu, Aguata Local Government Area.
According to the Anambra State Police Command, the operation, which lasted over five hours, led to the destruction of the militia camp and the recovery of a white Lexus 470 SUV along with several Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs). Several militia members reportedly fled, sustaining varying degrees of gunshot wounds. Security sources confirmed the area has since been stabilized, with continuous monitoring to ensure the safety of residents, and efforts are ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects.
While authorities have reassured residents of their commitment to combating criminality and restoring peace, the raid has sparked concerns among locals. Many fear that such operations could provoke retaliatory attacks by armed groups, potentially placing innocent civilians at risk. Residents also expressed anxiety over possible displacement and the long-term security implications for Aguata and neighboring communities, highlighting a need for sustained protection and community engagement alongside military interventions.
SP Tochukwu Ikenga, Police Public Relations Officer for the Anambra State Police Command, emphasized that security agencies remain vigilant, but the incident underscores the delicate balance between enforcement actions and community safety.
