
In a move to strengthen healthcare education and awareness, the Kano State Contributory Healthcare Management Agency (KSCHMA) has inaugurated the Students Contributory Healthcare Programme (SCHEP) Committees across eight Colleges of Nursing Sciences and Schools of Health Technology in the state. The initiative is aimed at promoting enrollment, sensitization, and peer education on contributory healthcare among students and staff of health institutions.
The inauguration ceremony, held at the KSCHMA Conference Hall, featured opening prayers and introductions from participants. Executive Secretary, Dr. Rahila Mukhtar, emphasized the strategic importance of SCHEP Committees, describing them as vital platforms to embed contributory healthcare awareness into the culture of tertiary health institutions. She tasked the committees with leading sensitization campaigns, peer education initiatives, and mobilization efforts to encourage participation in the healthcare scheme.
Dr. Jamila Mustapha provided a detailed presentation highlighting the objectives and benefits of SCHEP, alongside the role of the committees in championing healthcare education within their institutions. The highlight of the event was the formal inauguration of eight committees representing the following institutions: Kano State School of Nursing Sciences, Kano; Kano State College of Nursing Sciences, Madobi, Gwarzo, and Dambatta; Kano State School of Midwifery, Kano; School of Health Technology, Kano and Bebeji; and School of Hygiene, Kano.
Dr. Mukhtar urged the committees to take ownership of the programme, ensuring impactful sensitization efforts and active engagement with students. The event also featured interactive question-and-answer sessions and discussions on implementing the next steps to ensure the program’s success.
KSCHMA reaffirmed its commitment to delivering quality and affordable healthcare services. The SCHEP initiative is designed to provide comprehensive healthcare coverage for students throughout their studies, reinforcing the agency’s motto: “KSCHMA Cares: One Voice, One Health, One Future.”
