A Delta State man, Victor Ojei, popularly known as “Wong Box,” has been remanded in prison custody following an alleged violent attack on staff of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) during a disconnection exercise in Asaba. The incident, authorities say, occurred after Ojei resisted the disconnection of his property over an outstanding electricity bill of β¦4,870,780.
Ojei, who was arraigned on Monday, faces three charges including threat to life, assault occasioning harm, and threatening violence, contrary to sections 355, 86, and 249 of the Criminal Code. The Delta State Police Command confirmed the court’s decision, emphasizing that “nobody is above the law.”
The police reported that the suspect first came to attention on August 14, 2025, when he allegedly attacked BEDC staff with a cutlass while they were performing a lawful disconnection. During the confrontation, a pregnant staff member reportedly fell as a result of the chaos. Eyewitness accounts indicate that Ojei ordered the technicians to reconnect his compound while brandishing the weapon, prompting fear among the workers. A video circulating online captured him shouting defiant threats, claiming, “I am Wong Box of Delta State… I am a politician.”
Following his initial arrest, Ojei was granted bail but failed to report for further investigation, prompting a manhunt that led to his rearrest. The Delta State Police maintained that the arrest and remand underscore the importance of rule of law and the safety of utility workers carrying out lawful duties.
Authorities continue to appeal to residents to cooperate with service providers and avoid violent confrontations, noting that such actions not only endanger lives but also carry severe legal consequences.
