The Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), in partnership with the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Programme (RoLAC), funded by the European Union and implemented by the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA), organised a high-impact advocacy walk to combat Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV).
The walk, spanning the route from Onigbongbo LCDA to Ikeja LGA, drew widespread public participation, sending a powerful message that Lagos State maintains zero tolerance for SGBV. Residents, including commuters, traders, and passersby along the route, were sensitised on the dangers of abuse and the importance of reporting incidents promptly.
DSVA highlighted a suite of support services available to survivors, including medical care, legal assistance, psychosocial support, and empowerment programmes. These initiatives aim to provide relief and foster trust in the justice system. Participants, including advocates, volunteers, and community members, engaged the public through banners, placards, fliers, and flags, ensuring that the message reached a broad audience.
The advocacy walk demonstrated the effectiveness of collaboration, with DSVA’s partnership with RoLAC at the forefront. Support from the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA) and the Office of Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) further amplified the campaign. Other participants included staff from Onigbongbo LCDA and Ikeja LGA, the Ministry of Justice, NYSC members, Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), Rapid Response Squad (RRS), the Bureau of the Public Defender, the Child Protection Network Lagos, NGOs, and survivors of SGBV.
The event underscored the collective responsibility of society in ending abuse, going beyond institutional mandates to demonstrate community solidarity. By bringing together government agencies, civil society, and residents, the walk reinforced that the fight against SGBV requires a united and proactive approach.
