Director-General of the World Trade Organization (WTO), Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has formally received the credentials of two new permanent representatives to the global trade body in Geneva.

Those accredited on Friday were HE Hwang Jau-yuan, Permanent Representative of the Separate Customs Territory of Taiwan, Penghu, Kinmen and Matsu (Chinese Taipei), and HE Erica Schouten, Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the Office of the UN and other International Organizations in Geneva.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala described the moment as an important step in strengthening WTO’s engagement with its members at a time when international trade faces significant challenges. She expressed optimism about working closely with the new envoys, even as she acknowledged that the path ahead would be demanding.

The WTO chief emphasized that the inclusion of strong voices from both Asian and European partners would enrich ongoing efforts to reform global trade systems, build consensus, and promote equitable economic growth worldwide.

The presentation of credentials marks the start of active representation for both Chinese Taipei and the Netherlands within the Geneva trade architecture, reinforcing their role in multilateral dialogue at a critical period for the global economy.
