Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare of security personnel and their families, promising continuous support for those who lost their loved ones in active service.
The governor made the pledge on Friday, September 5, 2025, during an emotional gathering with widows, children, and relatives of security officers who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty. The event, which held at the Old Banquet Hall of the Government House, Makurdi, was attended by security chiefs, members of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA), and top government officials.
After leading a solemn minute of silence in honor of the fallen heroes, Governor Alia described them as gallant men who gave their lives so that Benue remains Benue, and Nigeria remains united. He announced an immediate cash support of ₦5 million for each family of the 74 officers who lost their lives between 2024 and 2025. The governor further directed the commissioners of education and humanitarian affairs to work closely with POWA and security agencies to design long-term empowerment and education programs for the widows and children, while also instructing that injured personnel currently in service should have their medical bills fully covered by the state government.
He cautioned against negative online narratives targeting security operatives, stressing that the police, the army, and other security agencies are not enemies of the people but institutions whose sacrifices guarantee peace and safety. He urged citizens to show appreciation and work in synergy with the uniformed men and women.
The Director General of Benue Homeland Security, Commodore Jacob Gbwamwuan (Rtd.), described the governor’s gesture as unprecedented in the history of Benue State, commending him for extending compassion to bereaved families. In the same vein, Benue State Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, praised Governor Alia’s intervention as a morale booster, assuring renewed commitment from security agencies to protect lives and property across the state.
Speaking on behalf of POWA and widows of the fallen officers, Mrs. Ujunwa Emenari expressed heartfelt gratitude, noting that the governor’s fatherly compassion had brought hope to families left behind by the heroes. She explained that many widows and children continue to face harsh realities following the loss of their breadwinners, but the governor’s generosity had rekindled their faith and confidence in government’s support.
Governor Alia’s intervention marks a defining moment in Benue State’s support for security personnel and their families, reflecting a government that values compassion, recognition, and sustained welfare for those who defend the peace and unity of the state.
