Kano State Task Force Partners Kwankwasiyya Mawallafa Association to Drive Voter Registration Mobilization

The Kano State Task Force on Mobilization of Voter Registration has intensified its public engagement drive by meeting with the Kwankwasiyya Mawallafa Association, a key cultural and creative group, to strengthen grassroots mobilization efforts.

The Task Force, chaired by the Honourable Commissioner of Information and Internal Affairs and supported by the Commissioners of Women Affairs, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, and other committee members, expressed deep concern over Kano’s relatively low performance in online voter registration.

While more than 1.3 million Nigerians have registered online nationwide, Kano has recorded only about 10,000—a figure ranking the state 18th despite already having over six million registered voters. The committee outlined an ambitious vision to achieve at least 10 million registered voters before the 2027 general elections, aiming to place Kano first nationwide.

Highlighting the importance of the Kwankwasiyya Mawallafa and Writers Association, the Task Force noted that the group was the second stakeholder to be formally engaged after INEC, in recognition of its influence, particularly among young people who have just attained voting age.

The Task Force called on members of the association to fully deploy their creativity and cultural influence in mobilizing citizens, pledging full government support for the campaign. In response, the leader of the association and Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Culture and Entertainment, Alhaji Tijjani Gandu, assured the committee of their total commitment. He stressed that music, culture, and creativity are powerful tools for shaping civic behavior and promised to use them to drive voter registration.

The interactive session identified challenges and mapped out solutions for effective collaboration. Both parties reaffirmed their readiness to work closely to ensure mass participation across Kano.

The Task Force further reiterated that traditional rulers, religious leaders, civil society groups, and women and youth associations will also be engaged to ensure a united front in sensitizing the public.

Through this collective effort, the Kano State Government reaffirmed its determination to lead the nation in voter registration, strengthening democracy through wide participation.
