The Executive Secretary of the Kwara State Health Insurance Agency (KW-HIA), Dr Olubunmi Jetawo-Winter, has disclosed that more than 100,000 residents have so far enrolled in the state’s health insurance scheme.
Speaking at an engagement held in Ijomu Oro, Irepodun Local Government Area, in collaboration with the European Union (EU-SARAH Initiative), Dr Jetawo-Winter explained that the scheme’s beneficiaries cut across students, the informal sector, persons with disabilities, and private organisations, while civil servants and their families will soon be fully integrated.
“Today, we have more than 100,000 beneficiaries enjoying health insurance in the state, starting from students in our tertiary institutions, the informal sector, private organizations, with all civil servants and their families joining it very soon,” she said.
She noted that Governor Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq’s consistent investments in the health sector have attracted unprecedented donor support to Kwara, with programmes targeting under-5 children, pregnant women, persons living with HIV, tuberculosis patients, and the physically challenged.
Highlighting the role of the EU-SARAH initiative, Dr Jetawo-Winter revealed that 15,000 individuals from vulnerable populations will receive free access to quality healthcare services for the next few years in facilities close to their homes. She stressed that the initiative is a deliberate effort to reduce infant, neonatal, and maternal deaths in the state.
Commending the governor, she said:
“From primary healthcare centres to tertiary hospitals, our Governor is intentional about the health and safety of the citizens.”
The event was graced by notable dignitaries, including Hon. Shola Odetundun (member, Kwara State House of Assembly, Irepodun Constituency), Oloriewe Raheem Adedoyin, Barrister Teju Oguntoye, Hon. Olabode Adekanye, Prince Samuel Alebiosu, and Hajia Rasheedat Kareem (APC Chairperson, Irepodun).
Traditional leaders present included the Baale of Ijomu Oro, High Chief Matthew Taiye Ademola, and High Chief Samuel Oguniyi, while the Oloro of Oro Kingdom, Oba Joel Olaniyi Oyatoye Titiloye II, was represented by the Eesa of Oro, High Chief Samuel Taiye.
In their remarks, Hon. Odetundun and Barr. Oguntoye commended the turnout and urged residents to take full advantage of the scheme. The Oloro of Oro also appealed to the community to embrace the programme, praising Governor AbdulRazaq’s commitment to affordable healthcare and development.
