The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the successful rescue of sixteen (16) passengers following an armed ambush on the Auchi–Benin highway.

According to a statement by the Command’s spokesperson, CSP Moses Joel Yamu, the incident occurred on Friday, 5th September, 2025, at about 4:30 p.m., when armed men laid siege at a sharp bend between Odemwingie and Obanrenren communities. The assailants opened fire and forced some passengers into the nearby bush after intercepting a Toyota Hiace bus belonging to New Edo Line Transport Company with registration number EDO 14 B03 ED, and a Toyota Camry car with registration number LAGOS-KJA 833 HR.

Upon receiving the distress report, the Commissioner of Police, CP Monday Agbonika, fdc, ordered the immediate deployment of the Divisional Police Officer, Ekiadolor, alongside tactical teams, vigilantes, and local hunters, who swiftly launched a massive bush-combing operation.

The operation led to the safe rescue of 16 victims, all unhurt, while efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining abducted passengers. An intensive manhunt has also been launched to track down the perpetrators.

The Edo Police Command assured the public of its unwavering commitment to the safety of residents and travellers. It further emphasized that the newly introduced Community Safety Partnership initiative by the Commissioner of Police will enhance collaboration between security agencies and communities in tackling such threats.

Members of the public have been urged to remain calm, vigilant, and law-abiding, and to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines: 08077773721 and 08037646272.
