The University of Usmanu Danfodiyo, Sokoto (UDUS) has conferred an Honorary Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) on Lieutenant General Faruk Yahaya (Rtd.), former Chief of Army Staff (COAS). The award was presented on Saturday, September 6, 2025, during the university’s 50th anniversary and 42nd convocation ceremony.
According to the University’s Governing Council, the prestigious award recognizes General Yahaya’s exceptional strategic leadership, intellectual acumen, and transformative contributions to Nigeria’s security and defense landscape during a critical period.
In his remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Bashiru Garba, described General Yahaya as a “distinguished Nigerian” whose tenure as COAS significantly strengthened the Nigerian Army.
“The University is immensely proud to honor a distinguished leader whose enduring legacy in fostering a resilient military and advancing national security is unparalleled,” he said.
General Yahaya played a pivotal role in navigating Nigeria through challenging security times. His leadership oversaw:
-
The elimination of Boko Haram commander Abubakar Shekau.
-
The successful conduct of the 2023 general elections.
-
Significant victories in degrading Boko Haram, ISWAP, and banditry in the North East and North West, contributing to what military authorities termed the “technical defeat” of these threats.
A grand reception was held in his honor, attended by dignitaries including former COAS, Lt. Gen. Tukur Yusuf Buratai (Rtd.), the Secretary to the Sokoto State Government, Alhaji Muhammad Bello Sifawa, representatives of the Sokoto State Government, senior military officers (serving and retired), members of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) 37th Regular Course, the Sifawa Development Forum, family members, and well-wishers.
The event featured goodwill messages, a celebratory lunch, souvenir presentations, and group photographs to mark the occasion.
