The Executive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ola Olukoyede, has called on journalists and media professionals across Nigeria to intensify efforts in exposing corruption and financial crimes in all sectors of society.

Olukoyede made this appeal in Warri, Delta State, while addressing participants at the 12th Annual Conference of the Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria (ACSPN). He was represented by Assistant Commander of the EFCC and Head of Public Affairs, Benin Zonal Directorate, ACE I Williams Oseghale.

Speaking on the conference theme, “Corruption, Governance and Media in Nigeria,” the EFCC Chairman stressed that the media plays a decisive role in shaping governance outcomes and holding leaders accountable. He praised the ACSPN for bringing corruption and good governance to the fore, describing the conversation as timely and essential.

Olukoyede recalled the historic role of Nigerian media icons such as Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe and Chief Anthony Enahoro, who used journalism as a tool for fighting colonialism, injustice, and military misrule. He urged present-day practitioners to uphold this legacy by embracing investigative journalism and exposing individuals and institutions involved in economic and financial crimes.

He added that corruption can be overcome when both citizens and institutions remain transparent, accountable, and committed to due process. According to him, the media will only fulfil its constitutional mandate as the Fourth Estate of the Realm when it actively promotes accountability and informs the public about the dangers of corruption.

Also speaking, ACSPN President, Professor Rotimi Williams Olatunji, highlighted the significance of the conference, noting that corruption continues to undermine governance, economic growth, and public trust. He emphasized that while the media is vital to building a stable society, practitioners still face many challenges, making platforms like the ACSPN conference crucial for exchanging ideas and advancing communication practice in Nigeria and beyond.
