Niger State Government Engages Scrap Dealers to Curb Vandalism and Theft of Properties

The Niger State Government has taken decisive steps to address the persistent vandalisation and theft of both public and private properties by engaging leaders of the state chapter of the Association of Scrap and Waste Dealers Employers of Nigeria. The meeting, held at the Government House in Minna, was convened under the directive of Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago to ensure a coordinated response to rising concerns across the state.

Governor Bago expressed his concern over the growing trend of criminals masquerading as scrap traders to deface structures and steal valuables, stressing that the government will not condone such acts. He urged the association to take responsibility for regulating its members, instituting measures to identify legitimate traders, and rooting out rogue elements.

The governor announced that a follow-up meeting would be held with key stakeholders across the state’s 25 local government areas and security agency leaders to review operational guidelines. He further stated that an executive bill would be forwarded to the State Assembly to provide a legal framework for regulating scrap trade and ensuring that violators face strict penalties.

To strengthen enforcement, Governor Bago charged the association’s task force to step up activities, particularly at major entry and exit points, to prevent the transport of uncertified scrap. He emphasized that proactive measures are critical to safeguarding state and private properties while promoting lawful trade.

In response, Mallam Mohammed Ahmed, Chairman of the state chapter, outlined plans to issue uniforms and identity cards for members as part of efforts to curb malpractice. He acknowledged challenges, including some local government areas’ reluctance to register traders and limited funding to sustain patrol operations. Mallam Ahmed expressed gratitude to the governor for the engagement and appealed for continued support to eliminate the circulation of stolen scrap.

Officials noted that the scrap trade, while an important economic activity, has been vulnerable to misuse, resulting in damage to infrastructure and loss of public resources. The collaboration between the government and scrap dealers aims to ensure the sector contributes positively to the economy while eliminating criminal activity.

The initiative is expected to restore public confidence, strengthen regulatory compliance, and safeguard property across Niger State, creating a model for other states facing similar challenges.
