Edo State Returns Government Buildings to BEDC after Ending Ossiomo Power Supply

Published on 10 September 2025 at 12:30

The Godwin Obaseki-led administration had disconnected government buildings and parastatals from the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) five years ago due to the persistently poor state of electricity supply in Edo State. Frequent power outages, erratic billing, and inadequate maintenance had made BEDC an unreliable partner for running critical government operations. To ensure uninterrupted electricity for government functions, the administration partnered with Ossiomo Power, a private independent power supplier, to provide consistent and stable energy to major government facilities, including the Government House, Secretariat, and key public institutions.

Residents and business operators in Edo State have had mixed views regarding BEDC over the years. While some appreciate the company’s efforts to distribute power across a large network with limited resources, many have consistently criticized BEDC for frequent outages, high tariffs, and perceived inefficiencies in billing. The reliance on private power suppliers like Ossiomo Power was widely welcomed by government workers and civil servants who had previously endured prolonged blackouts, which disrupted official work and service delivery.

With the recent decision by the Okpebholo-led administration to discontinue Ossiomo Power and reconnect government buildings to BEDC, public opinion is divided. Supporters argue that returning to the state’s main electricity grid could reduce operational costs, encourage uniformity in power distribution, and promote accountability from BEDC. Critics, however, fear that government offices may once again face irregular power supply and outages, potentially affecting productivity and service delivery.

In conclusion, while the reconnection to BEDC represents a move toward consolidating energy provision under the state’s primary electricity provider, its success will largely depend on the company’s ability to address past inefficiencies and provide reliable service. For Edo State residents and government workers alike, the challenge remains ensuring that BEDC can meet the high expectations of consistent power supply that led to the previous administration’s partnership with Ossiomo Power.
