NUATE Suspends Planned Strike at Ethiopian Airlines After Federal Government Mediation

The Ethiopian Airlines branch of the National Union of Air Transport Employees (NUATE) has cancelled its planned industrial action following successful mediation by the Federal Government.

The union had threatened to strike over issues including non-implementation of the Collective Bargaining Agreement on the 13th-month salary, lack of promotions, casual/contract staffing, and low remuneration.

At a conciliation meeting convened by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Muhammad Maigari Dingyadi, NUATE and Ethiopian Airlines signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The agreement sets a two-week timeline for both parties to discuss the outstanding issues and report back to the Ministry.

The MOU stipulates that a team comprising three union representatives, officials from the Federal Ministries of Labour and Aviation and Aerospace Development, and the Joint Aviation Trade Unions Forum will attend the follow-up meeting. The process will be supervised jointly by the two ministries, and no work stoppage will occur before the next meeting.

The MOU was signed by Firiehiwot Mekonnen, Area Manager, Ethiopian Airlines, Nigeria; Comrade Moses Unanaow, National Vice President, NUATE; Comrade Odinaka Igbokwe, Deputy General Secretary, NUATE; Abubakar M. Sadiq, representing the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development; and Amos O. Falonipe, Director of Trade Union Services and Industrial Relations, Ministry of Labour.

Earlier, Minister Dingyadi reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting decent work and industrial peace across all sectors.
