Security agencies in Kwara State on Saturday, September 13, 2025, moved swiftly to restore calm in Omu-Aran and parts of Isin Local Government Area after violent protests erupted over rising cases of kidnapping for ransom.
The Commander of the 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, led the operation in company with the Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, and the State Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Mr. Michael Oganwu. Their visit followed a distress call by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, who raised concerns about escalating tensions.
Protesting youths had blocked sections of the Omu-Aran–Eleyin–Ajase road, disrupting traffic and causing panic. Troops of the Nigerian Army, alongside the police and DSS operatives, dispersed the protesters, reopened the road, and arrested identified ringleaders, who were handed over to the police for further investigation.
Addressing the situation, Brigadier General Barkins assured residents of the Army’s commitment to protecting lives and property, while warning against violent demonstrations. He urged youths to channel their grievances through lawful and peaceful means, stressing that collaboration with security agencies was crucial in tackling kidnapping and other crimes.
The Brigade Commander further emphasized the importance of timely intelligence sharing between communities and security operatives to aid swift intervention.
After the operation, security chiefs met with local leaders including the Chairman of Isin Local Government, Honourable Jolayemi Benjamin, and village heads. Stakeholders were urged to discourage youths from resorting to violence and to work closely with authorities to safeguard peace. Hon. Benjamin commended the rapid response of the joint team and pledged the continued support of the local government in maintaining stability.
