At least 19 people have been confirmed dead after a vehicle transporting a bride and her family members fell into a river when the Gwalli bridge collapsed in Fass community, Gummi Local Government Area.
The incident occurred on Saturday, September 13, 2025, at about 4:45 p.m., when the overloaded vehicle carrying wedding guests crashed from the weakened bridge into the water beneath. Among the victims were men, women, and children, many of whom were family members of the bride.
A local resident, Babangida Halifa Ibrahim Fass, who lost relatives in the accident, recounted that the tragedy happened while his newlywed sister was being escorted to her husband’s home in Jega community.
Eyewitnesses said the bridge, long described as unsafe by locals, gave way under the weight of the vehicle, sparking renewed calls for urgent repairs of rural infrastructure in the state. Community members have appealed to the government to address the poor state of bridges and roads in the area to prevent future disasters.
Authorities are yet to issue an official statement at the time of this report. Search and rescue operations were carried out by locals before emergency agencies arrived at the scene.
