Anambra Police Arrest 54 Suspects, Recover Large Quantity of Hard Drugs in Separate Operations

Operatives of the Anambra State Police Command have intensified efforts to tackle cultism, moral decay, and drug-related crimes, resulting in the arrest of 54 suspects, comprising 39 males and 15 females, in separate raids across the state.

The Command highlighted growing concerns over societal moral decay, particularly among youths aged 18 to 26. Recent disturbing trends include fake kidnappings staged by couples to extort money from parents and indiscriminate cult-related shootings. One such incident occurred during a burial ceremony in Ezi-Ogidi, Ogidi, Idemili North LGA, where suspected cultists killed four individuals and injured 15 others.

Police noted that declining parental supervision and poor guidance contribute to these challenges. In response, the Command has adopted both kinetic and non-kinetic approaches, combining aggressive patrols, intelligence-gathering, targeted raids, and questioning of suspected cult members to curb these crimes.

On 12th September 2025, operatives of the Special Anti-Cult Squad (SPACS), Enugwu-Ukwu, arrested 25-year-old Chiderah Obochi at Ifitedunu along the Old Onitsha/Awka Road with quantities of dried leaves suspected to be Indian hemp. Obochi confessed to being a drug runner in Umudioka Village, Dunukofia LGA, and led police to a residence in Umudioka, where 11 bags of Cannabis Sativa were recovered. The seized substances are set to be handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further action.

Further operations on 14th September targeted a known cultist gathering spot in Ogidi, Idemili North LGA. Police arrested 53 suspects, including 38 males and 15 females. The individuals are currently undergoing screening and profiling, with culpable persons expected to face prosecution.

On behalf of the Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, the Anambra State Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to restoring law and order, protecting lives and property, and ensuring the state remains safe for all law-abiding residents.
