Abuja Court Declines to Hear Nnamdi Kanu’s Medical Transfer Request

A Federal High Court in Abuja has refused to hear a motion filed by Biafra agitator Nnamdi Kanu, seeking an order to transfer him from Department of State Services (DSS) custody to the National Hospital in Abuja for urgent medical care. The presiding judge, Justice Musa Liman, ruled on Monday that he lacks jurisdiction to entertain the matter as his tenure as a vacation judge ends the same day.

Justice Liman directed that the case file be returned to the court registry for reassignment by the Chief Judge. Kanu, who is facing terrorism charges, had requested the transfer citing serious health concerns, including issues with his pancreas and liver, a developing lump under his armpit, and critically low potassium levels. His lead counsel, Kanu Agabi SAN, argued that a prior application for bail, filed on May 19, could not be heard due to the court’s annual vacation, prolonging Kanu’s detention.

Agabi further stated that a letter from doctors recommending his transfer to the National Hospital had not received a response from the DSS. Justice Liman assured that he would recommend to the Chief Judge that the motion be expedited, given the applicant’s medical condition.

The case underscores ongoing concerns over Kanu’s health while in custody and the legal processes surrounding his trial.
