The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) has commenced intensive training for election officers in readiness for the bye-election scheduled for Saturday, September 20, 2025, across 15 Local Government Areas of the state.

The training, held at Imaguero College, Benin City, brought together presiding officers, assistant presiding officers, and returning officers, all expected to play key roles in ensuring a smooth, free, and transparent electoral process.

With the theme “Election Process and Procedures,” the sessions focused on professionalism, integrity, and efficiency in handling polls. Delivering lectures, EDSIEC Commissioner, Dr. Seleman Ikhuoriah, and senior commission staff, Mr. Dickson Aideyan, underscored the duty of election officials to uphold democracy and protect the sanctity of the ballot.

“This training is not only to enhance your skills but also to reinforce your commitment to a free, fair, and credible election,” Aideyan said.

Participants were exposed to electoral procedures, voter education, conflict resolution, post-election reporting, and hands-on simulations. They also received guidance on managing electoral challenges, with samples of key forms such as EDSIEC C1 and EDSIEC D1 provided.

The facilitators emphasized the need to build public confidence in the electoral process, urging officials to guard against misinformation and voter apathy.

The bye-election, triggered by the abandonment of office by some local councillors, has generated significant political activity as parties intensify campaigns. EDSIEC has assured that transparency and credibility will guide the conduct of the polls.

Speaking on behalf of trainees, Emmanuel Omoregie expressed confidence in the process: “I am grateful for this training. With the preparation we have received, we can deliver an election that truly reflects the will of the people.”

The affected Local Government Areas are Akoko Edo, Egor, Esan Central, Esan North East, Esan South East, Esan West, Etsako East, Etsako West, Igueben, Ikpoba Okha, Oredo, Orhionwon, Ovia North, Owan East, and Uhumwonde.

As Edo State heads to the polls, the commitment of trained officials is expected to strengthen the integrity of the electoral exercise and reassure voters of a credible outcome.
