The remains of 3-year-old Haneefa, who was swept away by floodwaters in Zaria, Kaduna State, have been recovered, bringing closure to the search for victims of the recent torrential rains.
Haneefa went missing on 8th September 2025 after heavy rainfall caused severe flooding in Tudun Jukun, Zaria, an incident that also claimed the lives of her siblings. The tragic event struck Tukur Tukur Ward, leaving the community in mourning.
According to Abdulmumin Adamu of the Nigerian Red Cross Society, Zaria Division, Haneefa’s body was found on Sunday morning at Gangaren Kasan Killaco, Gyallesu, Zaria. “This recovery brings closure to the search and confirms that all the flood victims are now accounted for,” he said.
The flood had earlier claimed the lives of two students, Fatima Sani Danmarke of the School of Basic and Remedial Studies, Funtua, and Yusuf Surajo, popularly known as Abba. Haneefa had been carried on the back of her sister Fatima when she was swept away.
Speaking on the recovery, Haneefa’s grandfather, Mallam Suleiman of Layin Adamu Mai Aljana, confirmed that the body was retrieved on Sunday afternoon and buried shortly after funeral prayers. “I was informed around noon that Haneefa’s body had been recovered. We immediately organized the funeral prayer and laid her to rest at about 1 p.m.,” he said, recalling that a Salatul Gaib (prayer for an undiscovered corpse) had previously been performed at Isa Cikon Kwami Mosque.
Suleiman expressed heartfelt gratitude to all who supported the family during this difficult period and prayed for blessings upon those who assisted in the search and burial.
The recovery of Haneefa’s remains marks a somber closure to a devastating flood that shook the Zaria community, highlighting the ongoing challenges of flood management and disaster preparedness in Kaduna State.
