The Deputy Governor of Lagos State, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has gifted an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Centre to his alma mater, Odu Abore Memorial Primary School, Mushin, in celebration of his 61st birthday.
The facility, commissioned today at the school premises, fulfills a promise Dr. Hamzat made during the institution’s 80th anniversary celebration. Speaking at the event, he explained that the gesture was inspired by the pivotal role technology has played in shaping his personal and professional journey.
“During the 80th anniversary of this school some years back, I noticed there was no ICT centre here. I felt it was something I could provide. ICT has contributed immensely to who I am today, and I want the children to understand the importance of digital knowledge. Every child must be computer-literate in today’s world,” Hamzat said.
The Deputy Governor described the donation as a way of giving back to his community while stressing that government alone cannot shoulder the responsibility of education. He emphasized that the centre would give pupils direct access to digital tools that would help them compete with their peers globally.
Highlighting state government initiatives, Hamzat noted that several schools in Lagos already have ICT hubs, but more investments are needed to prepare children for the digital future. He urged parents to embrace the positive side of technology by encouraging their children to acquire computer skills early.
In a goodwill message, Senator Ganiyu Olanrewaju Solomon, a member of the Lagos State Governance Advisory Council (GAC), praised the Deputy Governor’s vision, urging pupils and staff to safeguard and maximize the use of the new facility.
Similarly, Hon. Moses Fayinka, a Federal House of Representatives member representing Mushin Federal Constituency II, described the ICT centre as a strategic investment in the pupils’ future, noting that access to technology is essential in today’s rapidly evolving world.
Princess Olufemi Akinlude, Education Secretary of Mushin Local Government Education Authority, lauded the initiative as a “historic milestone” in the transformation of education in Lagos. She explained that the centre would not only enhance teaching and learning but also serve as a hub for creativity, innovation, and community training.
“This is not just a building of bricks and mortar. It is a gateway to opportunities, a hub for creativity, and a launchpad for innovation,” Akinlude said.
The event was attended by dignitaries, school administrators, and members of the Mushin community, all of whom commended Dr. Hamzat for his commitment to advancing education and technology.
