The Nigeria Customs Service, Murtala Muhammed Airport Command (MMAC), has declared the Lagos Airport unsafe for smugglers after intercepting illicit consignments of drugs worth ₦5 billion.
Speaking at a press briefing in Ikeja on Thursday, September 18, 2025, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Michael Awe, said the seizures involved cannabis, tramadol and other controlled medications smuggled into the country without required certification. He explained that the interceptions, which took place between July and September, included cannabis sativa, tramadol hydrochloride, pregabalin, sardalud and norflex tablets, all with a combined duty-paid value of ₦5 billion. Awe urged the public to remain vigilant and to purchase medicines only from reputable sources.
The seized drugs were officially handed over to the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) to reinforce the collaboration between both agencies. Receiving the items, NAFDAC MMAC Director, Nwude Kelechi, commended the synergy and warned those involved in the illicit drug trade that there was no hiding place for traffickers, adding that every attempt would be uncovered.
Meanwhile, Comptroller Awe also inaugurated a one-sided basketball court within the command, saying the facility would enhance the physical fitness of officers. He further decorated newly promoted officers, charging them to embrace discipline and responsibility while reminding them that the successes recorded by the command were products of diligence and commitment. The decorated officers pledged to uphold the integrity of the service and remain dedicated to its mission.
