Controversy Trails Recruitment of Safety Officers at Chevron EGTL

Tension is brewing within the Ugborodo community following reports that over 30 Safety Officers were recently recruited at Chevron’s Escravos Gas-to-Liquids (EGTL) facility by Itsekiri sub-contracting firms — with none of the successful candidates being of Itsekiri origin.

According to community voice, Banro Atete, the recruitment exercise allegedly favored only individuals of Igbo extraction, sparking concerns that EGTL is gradually turning into an “extended community in the South East,” while indigenous Itsekiri people are sidelined.

Atete accused the Ugborodo leadership of neglect and complacency, describing the leadership vacuum as worsening daily. He faulted local leaders for focusing on “dragging billboard positions” and seeking chieftaincy titles instead of securing rightful employment slots for their people.

“It is not enough to struggle for relevance in ceremonial matters when your own people are denied opportunities that belong to them,” he said, adding that true leadership should be modeled after Tompolo’s principles of character and responsibility.

The remarks have stirred conversations around equity, fairness, and the responsibilities of local leadership in ensuring that indigenous communities benefit from opportunities within their land.
