The Ladoke Akintola Airport, Ibadan, on Wednesday, recorded its first flight since it was shut down in March 2025 for an upgrade to international standards.
The aircraft — an advance member of the presidential fleet — touched down at exactly 9:14 a.m., heralding the successful completion of critical upgrades and exciting onlookers present at the facility.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is scheduled to arrive at the airport on Friday, September 26, 2025, ahead of the coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja.
The inaugural landing highlights the readiness of the newly upgraded airport infrastructure to safely accommodate high-profile flights, marking a significant milestone in Oyo State’s aviation and economic development agenda.
Governor ‘Seyi Makinde, who had performed the groundbreaking for the upgrade in September 2024, emphasized at the time that the project would connect Oyo State to the global market, boost business and tourism, and strengthen the state’s transport network.
The Makinde administration had earlier completed the upgrade of the VIP lounge, procured a modern fire truck, and installed a 500,000-litre aviation fuel storage and dispensing facility, underscoring its commitment to modernizing the airport.
The reopening positions Ibadan as a viable hub for air travel and economic growth, while also setting a strong precedent for future commercial and international flight operations.
