Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has reaffirmed the nation’s commitment to global aviation cooperation as he led the Nigerian delegation to the 42nd Session of the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) Assembly in Montreal, Canada.

On the sidelines of the assembly, Keyamo held a series of bilateral meetings with representatives from Saudi Arabia, Japan, Canada, and India. The discussions centered on building stronger collaborations to tackle common challenges within the aviation sector while also exploring strategic alliances ahead of the upcoming ICAO Council elections.

The ICAO Council, made up of 36 member states, serves as the governing body responsible for setting global aviation policies and ensuring safe, secure, and sustainable air transport. For Nigeria, retaining an active role on the Council is crucial, as it allows the country to contribute to shaping international standards while advancing its own aviation development goals.

Minister Keyamo noted that Nigeria’s participation reflects its long-standing influence in international aviation matters and its determination to remain a strong voice for Africa. He highlighted that cooperation with global partners is essential, not only for securing support during the elections but also for creating opportunities that enhance safety oversight, infrastructure growth, and innovation in Nigeria’s aviation industry.

The Minister further emphasized Nigeria’s readiness to strengthen aviation diplomacy, assuring that the country will continue to engage constructively with stakeholders across continents to ensure progress in areas such as passenger safety, environmental sustainability, and the modernization of air transport systems.
