The Garin Kolo Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) Camp has continued to receive waves of compassion as humanitarian partners, agencies, and leaders step up to support displaced families in their path to recovery. In recent days, a renewed push for relief and development has transformed the camp into a symbol of resilience and community care.
CARE International delivered vital food baskets to 255 flood-affected households, ensuring that families received much-needed staples including rice, beans, cooking oil, and salt to restock their kitchens. In a show of solidarity, Senator Ibrahim Bomoi, representing Yobe South, also extended relief through his representatives, providing grains, clothing, and fabrics to ease the burden on men, women, and children in the camp. These interventions have helped close the gap in food security and sustain households in urgent need.
Beyond food assistance, progress has also been made in water, sanitation, and hygiene. UNICEF Nigeria, working in partnership with WASSI, installed a 10,000-litre flexible water tank, now serving the daily water needs of the camp for the next month. Plans are also in motion for the construction of 10 new toilet blocks, a move set to improve sanitation and reduce health risks among the displaced population.
Education stakeholders have not been left behind. The Nangere LGEA team visited the camp, urging families to embrace temporary learning spaces as schools across the state prepare to reopen. Similarly, P-CARDO carried out an assessment to better support adolescent girls and women, ensuring education and empowerment remain at the center of recovery efforts.
Security and protection have equally seen significant progress, with the North-East Development Commission (NEDC) fulfilling a major promise by installing 25 solar-powered streetlights across the camp. This development has already improved safety, boosted morale, and reassured residents of continued support from authorities.
From food and water to education and security, every intervention has played a vital role in restoring dignity and strengthening resilience among the Garin Kolo IDPs. The collective efforts of partners, agencies, and leaders since the initial distress call have brought renewed hope to displaced families, showing what is possible when compassion and action come together.
