Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has urged the establishment of a strong and integrated national data system, highlighting its critical role in driving economic growth, informed policymaking, and sustainable development. He made the call in Asaba while inaugurating the 2nd International Conference of the Chartered Institute of Statisticians of Nigeria (CISON), hosted by Delta State, where he was represented by Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu.

Governor Oborevwori showcased Delta State’s commitment to evidence-based governance through significant investments in statistical surveys, including the Delta State Market Calendar, Statistical Yearbook, Labour Force, and Poverty Mapping reports. He noted that these data-driven initiatives have guided policies and informed interventions that have positively impacted over 300,000 poor and vulnerable households via the Delta State Economic and Community Empowerment Scheme (DECARES).

Emphasizing the transformative power of data, Governor Oborevwori stated, “Numbers alone are not enough. Their true value is realized when they are transformed into actionable knowledge that drives growth, shapes policies, and improves lives.” He suggested that Delta State’s approach could serve as a benchmark for other states seeking to enhance governance, attract investments, and achieve sustainable development.

The Governor also highlighted the potential for international collaboration, noting that robust data systems could attract development partners and investors who rely on accurate information for decision-making. By leveraging data for planning and policy, Delta State is positioning itself as a forward-thinking leader in governance innovation, economic planning, and social intervention.
