Dangote Refinery Terminates All Nigerian Staff Following Union Membership

In a move that has sent shockwaves through Nigeria’s oil and gas sector, Dangote Refinery has terminated the employment of all its Nigerian staff, less than 24 hours after the majority of workers joined the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).

According to a memo dated September 25, 2025, and signed by Chief General Manager of Human Asset Management, Femi Adekunle, affected employees have been instructed to surrender company property and obtain exit clearance. The finance department has been directed to calculate entitlements and benefits for payment in accordance with existing employment terms.

The refinery’s management explained that the move is part of a “total re-organisation” following reported sabotage in multiple units. However, labor advocates and analysts view the action as a direct challenge to workers’ rights and freedom of association. The termination has raised widespread concerns about the state of labor relations in Nigeria’s petroleum industry, with fears that the incident could spark nationwide protests and disrupt fuel supply chains.

PENGASSAN, which represents the interests of senior staff in the oil and gas sector, may pursue further action to address the situation. The dispute underscores ongoing tensions between Dangote Refinery and labor unions over unionization and workers’ rights.

While the refinery thanked employees for their service, the abrupt nature of the dismissals has left many former staff members alarmed about their immediate future. Labor experts warn that the resolution of this conflict will be closely watched, as it could set a precedent for industrial relations and union engagement across the Nigerian energy sector.

As the situation continues to develop, stakeholders are calling for dialogue and legal compliance to prevent escalation and safeguard the rights of employees.
