At the United Nations Headquarters, the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) participated in a high-level panel discussion themed “Cooperation by Design: The Power of Identity to Unlock Development”, organized by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC). The session highlighted how cooperative identity systems can transform lives, with Nigeria’s progress serving as a practical example of innovation and impact.

In his remarks, the DG reaffirmed NITDA’s vision of a digitally empowered Nigeria, emphasizing that inclusive growth is driven by innovation and centered on people. He described digital identity as the cornerstone of participation in the digital economy, enabling citizens to securely access services, exercise their rights, and unlock new opportunities.

With identity and payment infrastructures already in place, the DG noted that the data exchange layer under development represents the final piece of Nigeria’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) puzzle. These integrated systems provide trusted, interoperable services and facilitate cooperation in building digital solutions that function seamlessly across sectors and borders.

The DG also highlighted NITDA’s horizontal role across key sectors—including health, education, agriculture, finance, and governance—ensuring the safe and responsible use of digital technologies. By providing standards, regulatory frameworks, and innovation-friendly guidelines, NITDA guarantees that emerging technologies and digital infrastructure strengthen trust, safeguard citizens’ rights, and maximize socio-economic impact.

Additionally, he showcased Nigeria’s enabling legal ecosystem, including the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA 2023), the Nigerian e-Government Interoperability Framework, and the Nigerian Enterprise Architecture, which collectively support trust, integration, and efficiency. The DG further emphasized the transformative potential of Artificial Intelligence (AI), noting that responsible governance, inclusive datasets, and unbiased algorithms can significantly amplify the benefits of identity systems in promoting inclusion, sustainability, and shared prosperity.
