His Excellency Dr. Alex C. Otti, Executive Governor of Abia State, officially launched the European Union-funded Support for Sustainable and Innovative Social Protection Systems in Nigeria (SUSI) at the Government House Banquet Hall, Umuahia. The programme, implemented in partnership with UNICEF and the International Labour Organization (ILO), is designed to strengthen Abia’s social protection systems and provide support to the state’s most vulnerable citizens.
As part of the initiative, the European Union donated IT equipment and accessories to the Abia State Government, a contribution aimed at enhancing data collection efforts and addressing long-standing concerns about data integrity. Governor Otti also inaugurated the Abia State Social Protection Council, further demonstrating his administration’s commitment to inclusive governance.
Structured institutions such as the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, the Abia State Commission for the Welfare of Disabled Persons, and the Abia State Senior Citizen Centre are central to the state’s efforts to ensure no one is left behind.
Governor Otti expressed gratitude to key partners, including the European Union Head of Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Ambassador Gautier Mignot, ILO Country Director for Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, Dr. Vanessa Lerato Phala-Moyo, UNICEF Chief of Field Services, Judith Leveillee, and all collaborators for their unwavering support in building a resilient and equitable Abia State.
